It’s important to investigate the impact any solar-powered product may have upon light pollution, a topic of increasing global concern. Light pollution is defined as “excessive, misdirected, or obtrusive artificial light”. Too much light pollution has consequences: it washes out starlight in the night sky, interferes with astronomical research, disrupts ecosystems, has adverse health effects and wastes energy. Adverse impact is most severe in highly industrialized, densely populated areas.

The good news is that light pollution can be reduced fairly easily by shielding lights properly, by only using light when and where it is needed, by only using the required amount, by using energy-efficient bulbs, and by using bulbs with appropriate spectral power distributions for the task at hand. First-time observers of Solarpost installations tend to use descriptors like “sleek”, “attractive” and “forward-thinking”, but we think there is even more to like when one further investigates Solarpost’s Eco-friendly technology and responsibility to our environment.

Solarpost reacts to passersby and controls energy output.

Under normal conditions, the bollards provide a low level of continuous lighting. However, once an individual approaches, only then does Solarpost’s illumination level automatically increase – to shroud them within a reassuring pool of light. Once they pass, the level automatically returns to its normal (low) level. By virtue of this clever technology, lighting only increases from a low background level when required, greatly reducing light pollution and limiting unnecessary energy use.

Solarpost minimizes impact upon light pollution in several ways. The aforementioned “brains” behind the product control the intensity of the light and only use what is required by the situation. Also, the illuminated area is confined to a controlled aura surrounding each bollard, so as not to unnecessarily cast light upwards into the night sky. Everything was designed to minimize environmental impact, while still providing adequate protection for passing pedestrians and cyclists.

Solarpost responsible lighting

With Solarpost components specified for a minimum of 10 years, the total savings in CO2 emissions over that period will be noteworthy. For a typical installation along a pathway with multiple lighting posts, the savings quickly become exponentially significant.

Great looks, cost effectiveness, adaptive technology and responsibility to the environment: there’s a lot to love about Solarpost!
